What is the most important room of your home-The kitchen Remodel

What is the most important room of your home-The kitchen.

The kitchen is the central work zone and most commonly used social place of the home. Consider how many times you use this area during the course of the day.  Breakfast, morning paper, coffee, lunch, sort through mail, going over homework with the kids, before, during and after dinner.  When friends and family come to visit, where do you tend to gather? The kitchen, this is why it is referred to as the heart of the home.  This is also the reason the kitchen is the top remodeled room of a home.

It is used by everyone -Whether it is your gourmet indulging husband or your toaster popping Eggo son, the kitchen is visited by family and friends more than any room in your home. It is the most public and yet personal area in your home. Unlike a bedroom, which is more private, the kitchen reflects your taste in more ways than just food selections.

It has a purpose– Like the bathroom which has a unique function; the kitchen is designed for preparing, serving and storing food.  Even if you are a microwave master, you still need this room for cooking, eating and cleaning up after your meal.

It is a Showpiece– Kitchens are the main focus when buying or selling a home.  They are the most visited and remembered room.  A kitchen, by far, reflects the homeowner’s colors, styles and personality. The first room to receive any type of upgrade will be the kitchen due to this.

It is a must-While many rooms in your home can be used as a replacement of others. A bedroom for example, can be used as a den, office or even as a family room or vice versa. The kitchens along with the bathroom are designed to function for that purpose only. While the kitchen, with larger floor plans and added desktop designs, have the distinction of becoming the most versatile room in the home. It can be used not only as a place for meals, but also as an office, a get together, even a place to watch the evening news.

It is Unique-It is the only room in your home where you have so many options to show off your taste and styles. You can create a dream kitchen by selecting the type of appliances, dining furniture, flooring, decorative trim, cabinets, hardware, lighting, countertopssinksfaucetsbacksplash designs and wall coloring. And what better room to show off your style than the most visited place in the home.

Granite or Quartz

Granite is a natural product and depending on the selection, may vary from slab to slab. We recommend veiwing granite slabs to see the true beauty granite has to offer. We have a wide selection of granite slabs available for veiwing at our Concord location. We also work in conjunction with several Granite suppliers located in the Charlotte area.

Quartz is a man made product, with a repeating pattern, usually a small sample will give you an idea of how the completed project will look. Quartz has come a long way in duplicating the unique designs that Granite has to offer. You can view many of our Quartz samples at both our Concord and Charlotte Loacations.

Once you’ve made your Granite or Quartz selection, here are a few more thigs to consider.

Edge Options-seems like a small thing but conside this the icing on the cake. What edge you select will give your granite or quartz that finished look. Visit our edge page for more information and ideas.

Sink Selections-A major consideration, remember, 90% of the time spent in the kitchen or bathroom is at the sink. Thinking about a farm sink or even a vessel sink. Farm sinks must be installed before we can template the kitchen area to ensure a proper fit of the countertop. Vessel sinks must be pre-ordered in order to cut the exact drain and faucet placements. Stainless Steel sinks-Single bowl or a 50/50, 60/40, 70/30 or even a small prep sink. We carry a wide selection of sinks, visit our sink page to learn more.

Faucets-Where would the sink be with out the faucet. Pre-selecting the faucets allows us to CNC or computer custom cut the exact holes for the faucet placement.

Countertop Supports-Will your kitchen include an island or a countertop bar area that require supports. How much of an over hang requires supports. Are you looking for hidden supports or decorative Corbels. Visit our Supports page to learn more.

Sealer-For most Granite colors our Installers apply a granite sealer after the countertops have been installed. In the case of light to white granites, we recommend using Hydroshield, lighter granites tend to be softer and more porous. Learn more at our Hydroshield page.

Backsplash-Considering a standard 4″ Backsplash or looking to complete the remodel with other backsplash options like tile, glass, slate and even stone. Here the design can be a simple 4 x 4 Travertine tile accented with mosiac tiles to a complete Slate backsplash.

We have the most talented tile installers that will complete you kitchen or bathroom, usually the day after the countertops are installed. Granite countertops Care

granite countertops Granite countertops Care

Granite is a very durable material, making it a popular choice for many homeowners, builders and even rental properties. The lasting quality and beauty of this stone makes it a wonderful material to use in kitchens and bathrooms.

Caring for granite, marble, quartz, Silverstone and other solid surface vary in some degree; this is because some stones are more porous than others. Dark granite colors for example are less porous than lighter granite colors. We will discuss more about this in an upcoming post. Using a general care guide for all stone surfaces you can avoid major care problems in the future.

Wipe up spills has they happen, some liquids like coffee, wine and juices if left unattended can stain the surfaces.

Use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe away the stains. Avoid abrasive cleaning sponges or cleaners, these can dull the surface of the stone.

Hot water will usually do the trick for spills, use dish soap and water sparingly, although it can be used, it will leave a residue, even when rinsed.

Avoid cleaning product that contains bleach or ammonia. These cleaning products can damage the stone surface.

As a general rule hot water is your best tool for “on the spot” cleaning. There are many granite cleaning products made specifically for these stone. We recommend having at least one of these products on hand, for a weekly maintenance cleaning.

If your kitchen is a busy place and some spills are unavoidable, like grease spills, wipe off the spill with hot water and a degreasing agent, I personally recommend dawn dish soap-the original blue product. Just remember that dish soap products will leave some residue, so rinse well.

We strongly recommend using cutting board when working in the kitchen. Not only will this keep acidic liquids from getting on the countertop, cutting on granite countertops will actually dull the knife blade.

Use hot pads under pot and pans placed on your countertop, you can not burn the stone surface, {unless you’re cooking with a blow torch!} This will prevent foods trapped under the pots or pans from scratching the countertop surface.

As you can see for the most part granite countertops are very easy to maintain. This is one of the best qualities of stone countertops. With a little care, your investment will probably outlast any other home improvement you will do.

Okay, so you’ve taken all the steps to keep your surface free from stains and damage, but you have kids or that husband that just forgets sometimes. In our next post we’ll go over some of the ways to fix problems stains and scratches. Granite sealers will also be an upcoming topic. So please check back often. I would love to hear any comments or questions, please feel free to post those to me.
